Former Buccaneers Star Doug Martin Dies at 36; Cause of Death Still Unconfirmed

Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Doug Martin, known for his rare combination of speed, strength, and agility, has passed away at the age of 36.

Martin’s family confirmed his death in a public statement released Saturday, saying, “It is with great sadness to inform you all that Doug Martin passed away Saturday morning. Cause of death is currently unconfirmed. Please respect our privacy at this time.”

Born and raised in Stockton, California, Martin rose to prominence at Boise State University, where he became one of the most dynamic players in school history. Over four standout seasons, he amassed more than 3,400 rushing yards and 43 touchdowns, playing a vital role in the Broncos’ continued success under coach Chris Petersen.

One of Martin’s most memorable college performances came in the 2011 Maaco Bowl Las Vegas, where he earned MVP honors. In that game, he rushed for 151 yards and electrified fans with a 100-yard kickoff return touchdown, helping Boise State dominate Arizona State 56–24.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Martin in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft (31st overall). He quickly made an impact, finishing his rookie season with 1,454 rushing yards, 11 touchdowns, and 472 receiving yards. His record-setting 251-yard, four-touchdown performance against the Oakland Raiders remains one of the most memorable games in franchise history.

Martin’s NFL career had moments of brilliance mixed with personal and physical challenges. Despite injuries and a 2016 suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy, he sought treatment and spoke openly about his struggles, earning respect for his honesty and determination to rebuild his life.

He delivered another stellar season in 2015, rushing for over 1,400 yards and solidifying his reputation as one of the league’s toughest runners. After six years in Tampa Bay, Martin joined the Oakland Raiders in 2018, where he contributed 723 rushing yards and four touchdowns before quietly retiring after the season.

Across seven NFL seasons, Martin recorded 5,356 rushing yards and 30 touchdowns, including 4,633 yards and 26 touchdowns with Tampa Bay — achievements that place him among the Buccaneers’ all-time great running backs.

Doug Martin leaves behind a legacy defined by perseverance, passion, and an undeniable impact on the field.
