Ian Watkins, the former lead singer of the Welsh rock band Lostprophets, was killed in a violent attack at a UK prison, according to British media reports.
The 48-year-old musician was serving a 35-year sentence at Wakefield Prison in northern England for multiple child sex offenses.
According to West Yorkshire Police, officers were called to the prison at 9:39 a.m. on Saturday after reports of an assault on an inmate. Emergency services arrived shortly afterward, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities did not officially name Watkins in their statement.
Police have not yet commented further on the incident or the suspect involved in the attack.
Watkins was convicted in 2013 after pleading guilty to 13 serious offenses, including two attempted rapes and several counts of sexually assaulting children under the age of 13. He also admitted to aiding and abetting the sexual assault of minors, conspiring to commit sexual offenses, and possessing indecent and extreme pornographic images.
The shocking case had stunned fans and the music world, marking a grim fall from fame for the once-popular frontman. An investigation into his death is currently underway.
