Republicans suffered heavy defeats across nearly every major election on Tuesday night, sparking deep concern among MAGA supporters about what the 2026 midterms could bring.
GOP candidates in both New Jersey and Virginia were soundly defeated by their Democratic rivals. In Virginia, Abigail Spanberger, the Democratic candidate, defeated Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears by roughly 15 percentage points. Meanwhile, in New Jersey, Mikie Sherrill won decisively against Jack Ciattarelli, leading by more than a dozen points.
Even beyond these states, the pattern continued. In New York City, Democrat Zohran Mamdani beat former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent after losing the Democratic primary, by more than nine points. And in California, voters overwhelmingly passed Proposition 50, allowing temporary redistricting maps that favor Democrats — despite massive financial efforts from Republican donors to stop it.
On Truth Social, former President Donald Trump expressed frustration, claiming that the GOP’s poor showing was due to his absence from the ballot. He called on Senate Republicans to “TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER” and pass new voting laws.
“Pass Voter Reform, Voter ID, No Mail-In Ballots. Save our Supreme Court from ‘Packing,’ No Two State addition, etc.,” Trump posted.
The reaction within MAGA circles was overwhelmingly grim. Turning Point USA executive Tyler Bowyer echoed Trump’s sentiment, saying that without Trump on the ballot and without strong voter outreach, Republican turnout suffered.
“When Trump isn’t on the ballot and you don’t make investments in chasing votes, you get voters who stay home,” Bowyer said.
Former Trump strategist Steve Bannon warned his audience that Tuesday’s results were a wake-up call, noting that Democrats flipped two Georgia commissioner seats for the first time in three decades.
“The midterms start tonight, and the warning signs are flashing,” Bannon cautioned on his podcast.
Far-right activist Mike Cernovich issued a grim prediction on X (formerly Twitter), writing:
“Ted Cruz and Mark Levin are walking Trump into impeachments and then prison. 2026 will be a blood bath.”
Similarly, MAGA commentator Jack Posobiec warned that things could get even worse in 2026 if the movement doesn’t change course soon.
Conservative analyst Erick Erickson also chimed in, declaring that Trump’s political influence is fading fast.
“Lame duck status is going to come even faster now,” he wrote. “Trump can’t turn out the vote unless he’s on the ballot—and that’s never happening again.”
The mood across the MAGA movement is one of deep anxiety — as once-loyal voices begin to acknowledge that the Republican Party’s dependence on Trump may be turning from an asset into a liability.
